When we treat people merely as they are, they will remain as they are. When we treat them as if they were what they should be, they will become what they should be.
Thomas S. Monson
I met this down to earth young change maker from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at YALI RLC EA. She is strong spirited and when she starts to speak, her French accent is pronounced. Her outgoing character scooped her ‘Self Acclaimed Queen’ award from YALI RLC EA. Safi Mambo Sophie shares her interesting story.
Tell me what you like about your country…
“My name is Safi Mambo Sophie, an entrepreneur in DRC. I love our music because it’s original Rhumba. People in my country are kind, humble and welcoming. We all live as a united people. French is our official language although there are 215 more languages spoken in DRC. The main religion is Christianity with 95% followers. DRC has a magnificent Nyiragongo volcano and Mt. Stanley which is the 3rd highest mountain in Africa right after Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
DRC is also home to the oldest national park in Africa called Virunga National Park. It is rich in resources like gold, platinum, diamonds, iron ore and uranium.

Your talents …
I believe my talent is making people laugh, comfortable and easy everywhere I go. I am also good at planning events.
Challenges facing youths in your country…
The major challenge youths have is the negative mentality towards other challenges like unemployment and corruption. They need to think of solutions to the problems they are facing rather than just complaining. Youths should focus on making life better for themselves.
Youths and volunteering…
I am a volunteer and member of a children’s organization in DRC. We talk mostly about human rights. Respect for human rights is something I love doing. Before I got employed in my current company, I volunteered in a Non Governmental Organization that dealt in rights for informal workers.
You and books…
I am a lover of Romantic novels, management tools, cartoon animations and Spiritual books. One of my favourite author is Witness Lee who has written books like The Experience of Life and Divine Economy. I also like reading novels like The Passion Price authored by Miranda Lee.
Words of encouragement…
When you focus on what you can do then everyone will have something to do. It is only unrealistic to just sit and wait for the government to help you. Start where you are, with what you have. I am a Christian and I believe that God gives us the things we need but we have to work to have them. Be yourself. Know your dreams, mission, vision and what you need to get where you want.
If you were not doing what you are doing now, what would you be doing?
